Hatchet 3 is Hatchet's horror film of 2013. It is a follow-up to Victor Crowley's murderous rampage across Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. The film features Kane Hodder as Victor Crowley, Brian Quinn as Deputy Winslow, and Rileah Vanderbilt in the role of Misty.
The film's main strength is its use of practical special effects. Hatchet 3 uses a majority of practical makeup effects as well as sets. This is different from the majority of horror films nowadays that heavily rely on CG effects. It also features several truly terrifying moments.
The cast gives a strong performance, with Kane Hodder standing out as an incredibly terrifying villain. The dialogue is hilarious and clever enough to make it seem like an 80s slasher film. There are some funny moments that stand out against all the heart-wrenching scenes.
Unfortunately, because the budget is so limited (reportedly one million dollars) the majority of locations used that are featured in the movie are reused locations from earlier films in the series. For example (blog post) the exact boathouse location was used twice in the film. Many of these locations seem like they've been reused from other films from this series. Hatchet or Hatchet2 may feel it's a familiar film.
Overall, Hatchet 3 was enjoyable although it was very similar in tone to previous installments in the series. It was filled with thrilling thrills and some entertaining performances from the cast members.
